For DaoDao Yang, a native of Dali, China, choosing a programme in mathematics came down to the decision of where he felt most challenged and most comfortable. This ultimately meant turning down offers at New York University and the Berlin Mathematical School to accept an offer from the Master’s programme at the Higher School of Economics. In an extensive interview with the HSE news service, Dao Dao recently spoke about what led him to choose HSE for his postgraduate study; his impressions of the programme, its professors and his fellow students; and his future plans.

On June 24, as the entire world was reeling from the Brexit vote, the centre of Moscow saw another farewell taking place at HSE, albeit one considerably more festive in nature. This was the 10th anniversary of the Public Policy programme at HSE where 35 graduates received their diploma after two years of hard work to earn their coveted Master’s degree in Public Policy.
HSE Faculty of Law delivered a course on Jurisprudence for exchange students from the Nice Sophia Antipolis University as part of long-term ties between the universities. This was the first student exchange under the partnership agreement between the two universities. HSE plans to further develop this partnership programme.
On June 27, the first cohort of HSE Preparatory Year graduates received their diplomas after passing the exams. Launched in 2015, the programme offers international students an excellent opportunity to develop their Russian language skills and prepare for Russian-taught programmes at HSE and other Russian universities. This year, approximately 90 people from over 30 countries studied in the programme, which included several tracks – economics, humanities and science.
Bob Jennekens studied commercial law and STI policy at Maastricht University but worked on his master’s thesis under the supervision of professors from two universities and came to HSE to defend it.
June 20th marked the start of HSE’s third Summer University. This year’s programme saw the participation of students from 25 different countries.
In May, the HSE Voronovo Learning Centre hosted the International Spring School on Human Rights, a five-day educational retreat organized jointly by the HSE Department of Public Policy, the University of Bologna and the International Institute of Human Rights in Strasbourg.
The Master’s programme in System and Software Engineering aims to provide students an opportunity not only to acquire the knowledge and experience they need in their chosen profession, but also to help them generate a systemic view on bringing resolutions to the difficult professional challenges they are certain to face in the future. A team from HSE has made it to the Regional Finals of the CFA Institute Research Challenge 2015/2016, recently held in Chicago. The CFA Institute Research Challenge is an annual global competition that provides university students with hands-on mentoring and intensive training in financial analysis.
