My semester at HSE Moscow

Our exchange student Zoe Heroufosse from Belgium tells about her studies at HSE University Moscow during the Spring 2023 semester.

My name is Zoe Héroufosse, currently concluding my bachelor’s degree in political sciences, I have decided to study for a semester in HSE, Moscow

HSE is one of the best universities in Russia: the academic atmosphere it provides, as well as the active student community organising cultural events every week and the sport activities, it sometimes feels like you won’t have time for yourself.

Before arriving to Moscow, the SIMO administration had provided us with clear instructions, Tatiana herself was always available for other information and concerns over the complicatedness of coming to Russia. Once you are there, you can get help from anyone – from the students to the teachers, the supervisors in the dorm, and even strangers on the streets (though I do not recommend you address them when in a rush because they might end up talking to you for hours) which has made my semester here greatly enjoyable.

Regarding my courses, HSE has a wide range of subjects, and as an exchange student I had the opportunity to freely choose them, which is why most of my classes involve Asia since my previous formation in Brussels limited itself to the Western part of the world and the institutions of the European Union.

The teaching method is also different, namely the seminars. I was quite astonished at the participation and the curiosity of the students, openly revealing their opinions which can contradict the words of the teachers, something I was not used to witness in the big amphitheatres of my home university. The academy also offers numerous projects.

Besides the interests about their studies, my classmates have welcomed me with open arms, inviting me to events organised by the faculty and tours of the city, as well as the teachers who made sure I was comfortable with the courses.

Choosing HSE means choosing Moscow, by far one of the cleanest and safest capital city I have ever visited. Despite being a huge city, it is well organised, and the metro system is highly convenient, an extra to the beauty of the stations.

But as my Russian friend said: «You haven’t seen Russia if you stayed in Moscow». It is a multi-ethnic country, and it would be a shame to limit your sojourn to Moscow or Saint-Petersburg; Russia is much more than the main tourist attractions. The best thing that could happen during your time in Russia is if you are invited by your local friends to their home or dacha, as you will be lucky enough to acknowledge the everyday lives of Russian people and live an authentic experience. A contrario of stereotypes, Russians are extremely approachable and hospitable, so don’t miss your chance to be the fortunate guest of this country.
