'An eye-opening experience in Moscow' by Hikaru Suzuki

Hikaru Suzuki, a student from Hosei University (Japan), who spent his exchange year in HSE University Moscow, shares his feedback on living and studying in Moscow.

The year I spent in Higher School of Economics was an intense and delightful experience in my undergraduate program. As a non-Russian speaker with little knowledge about Russia, it had been full of riveting moments to live and study in Moscow. Inside and outside of the classroom, I have learned many lessons that enriched my life. I am certain that I could not have enjoyed more of this exchange program at HSE.

The time I had as a student at HSE was very unique from anything that I have experienced. Being part of the classes, surrounded by passionate students was very encouraging and the atmosphere there was just right for academic pursuit. As a student for linguistics and cultural studies, attending and learning at the classes gave me a new insight into not only my major area but also other academic disciplines. Things I learned there gave me fresh perspectives towards the dissertation I am currently working on.

More than anything else, without great friends I was fortunate enough to have, my stay would not have been as amazing as it had been. Memorable moments I had with those friends are countless. Exploring the newness with them was amusing, especially the trips to Saint Petersburg and Sochi were unforgettable. Also in Moscow, I had a fascinating time exploring the city with friends. Sharing the time during the exchange, I feel my friends and I could experience each other's culture and intelligence through the discussion and even from daily chat. There was not any boring moment to converse with them.

Needless to say, I had been supported by many people during my stay. Students from Erasumus Student Network were doing amazing job to make our stay enjoyable and comfortable. There were so many people to thank to and I cannot thank them enough for the support and opportunity I have been offered.
